Move before you think you are ready. It is as if you are making it a little more difficult for yourself, deliberately creating obstacles in your path. When you feel that you must work harder to get to your goal because you are not quite prepared, you are more alert and inventive. This venture has to succeed and so it will. -The 50th Law (Robert Greene)
The Ivy Waweru Foundation, started by 22 year old Ivy Waweru is a non-profit organization aimed at improving maternal healthcare for women with physical disabilities. She was driven to start with organization following challenges that she experienced while she was expectant. The biggest being negative perception from family and her doctor who feared she would have a complicated pregnancy because of her condition. However, she had a normal pregnancy and was even able to take herself to hospital when she was about to deliver. People were scared and this got to her at times. She would also feel the risk and at times the topic to terminate the pregnancy came up, but, the excitement of being a mother gave her strength.
Here are the activities involved in the foundation;
Specialised maternal health care facilities: Have different units for physically disabled expectant women of world class standards. With well trained medical practitioners on the best way to handle their patients. She says she got more information from Google than doctors on the best way to handle pregnancy with her condition.
Counseling: It will offer personal counselling to the expectant mother, her spouse and family. The goal is to avoid her stigmatization. Assure the family that she can have a normal pregnancy, can handle motherhood and marriage. All the pressure Ivy received from almost everyone she met led to days of post natal depression and, she want to reassure all women that its just fear that should be dealt with.
Relief: Offer relief to families of physically disabled mothers such as food, dippers, riser recliner chairs, walkers among many things she hopes these women will have.
Marathons: Annual marathons in the country to raise funds and create awareness.
She leaves us with a quote, "Courage is not the absence of fear, its the conviction that something else is greater than fear. "
"This is what we do, my mother's life said.
We find ourselves in the sacrifices we make. "
